Department Was Formed In 2000 To Help Combat The Spread
Of West Nile Virus In Pennsylvania. The Department's Primary Responsibility
Is To Monitor County Mosquito Populations And Report Any Concern
Areas To The Pa Dep. Mosquito Populations Are Monitored Through
Trapping And Other Surveillance Activities. Populations Are Also
Controlled When Deemed Appropriate. The Department Also Focuses
On Educating County Residents On Ways To Help Reduce The Threat
Of West Nile Virus.
Additional information:
A highlight of the department has been it's source
reduction program where in 2002 approximately 3,466 tires were removed
from along roadways and properties. The source reduction program
is aimed at eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites within
the county and is coordinated with the carbon county department
of solid waste.
