April 2010

April 24th

Spring Cleanup at Mauch Chunk Lake Park

Volunteers are needed for a community cleanup day at the Mauch Chunk Lake Park as part of the Great American Cleanup of PA.  The cleanup will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  Meet at the park office. 

May 2010

May 08th – 09th

  Fun, Float & Fly With the Tuscarora RC Flyers

Model airplane displays and demonstrations at the beach area starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m.  Parking and admission is free. 

May 16th

   Children’s Fishing Derby sponsored by
Jim Thorpe Sportsmen’s Association

Just a short drive from the camping area this annual fishing contest is located along the historic Switchback Trail.  The Mauch Chunk Creek is stocked with plenty of brook and rainbow trout. 

May 22nd

   Fish for Free Day sponsored by the
   PA Fish & Boat Commission

Fish for Free Days allow anyone to legally fish for Pennsylvania’s most popular fish without a fishing license.  The Mauch Chunk Lake Park is also an official Fishing Tackle Loaner Program site.  Park visitors can borrow fishing tackle free of charge.

May 29th

   Pennsylvania Coyote presented by PA Game
   Commission

Join Wildlife Conservation Officer Fred Merluzzi at the camp store while he shares some interesting facts about Pennsylvania Coyotes.

   Introduction to Pennsylvania Mammals

Carbon County Environmental Education Center

The Mauch Chunk Lake Park is home to a wide variety of Pennsylvania mammals.  This program will introduce you to several of our forest friends.

5th Annual Race Street Run

The Race Street Run consists of a 4 mile/15K race through the heart of the historic district in Jim Thorpe and follows the Switchback Trail. For more information and to register for the event please visit www.racestreetrun.org

   10thAnnual Anthracite Triathlon Weekend

Youth event (swim and run only) will be held on Saturday, July 17th beginning at 9:00 a.m. followed by the main event on Sunday, July 18th.  Swimming begins at 7:00 a.m. followed by the 40K bike and 10K run.  For course information and to register for the event contact race director Rob Gould at the Hazleton YMCA at (570) 344-2404 or visit their website at www.anthracitetriathlon.org.

   Introduction to Pennsylvania Reptiles & Amphibians presented by Carbon County
   Environmental Education Center

Susan Gallagher, Chief Naturalist, with the CCEEC will present an informative program about woodland snakes and turtles.

August 2010

August 12th

Astronomy and Star Gazing on the Beach

Bring a blanket and chair and meet at the beach area for an informative program before the annual Perseid meteor shower.  The Perseid meteor shower has been viewed for over 2000 years. Given the right conditions it is one of the most spectacular meteor showers to view. 
August 21st

   Birds of Prey presented by Carbon County
   Environmental Education Center

The Carbon County Environmental Education Center is a facility dedicated to wildlife rehabilitation.  Meet with the staff at the camp store to learn more about their efforts and these magnificent birds of prey. 

September 2010

September 11th

Composting Campers & S'mores Night!

The Penn State Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will be sponsoring another Smores Night on Saturday, September 11th. Kids will learn the basics of composting and will be treated to some S'mores!

September 18th

   Anthracite Heritage Festival


The 4th annual Anthracite Heritage Festival is a fun day filled with bluegrass performances, historical exhibits, environmental exhibits, food vendors, and crafters.  Admission is $3.00/adult and Children 12 & under are free.

Memory Walk & Family Fun Day

Star Gazing - Meteor Shower

There will be a star gazing on the beach program on Saturday, October 16th. The star gazing program is being held during the annual Orionids meteor shower.
