Whitewater Rafting

Francis E. Walter Dam
Lehigh River
Whitewater Release Dates 2014

The following plan is dependent on the pool upstream of the FEW Dam achieving the 1,370 foot elevation, which provides 6.2 billion gallons of storage at 70 feet above baseline.

Planned releases are for 12 hours, beginning at 1 a.m. and ending at 1 p.m. Recreational releases may be modified or cancelled due to extreme weather, either drought or storm. Notification of changes are posted on the USACE website

May 10 17 24 25
June 7 8 21 22
July 5 6 19 20 26 27
August 2 3 9 10 16 17 23 24 30 31
October 11 12
Planned whitewater release dates. These dates are dependent on sufficient storage of water, which is a level of 1,370 feet elevation in the dam during the spring, between April 1 and the first release.
Planned whitewater release dates, dependent on sufficient precipitation.
These dates have been set aside to provide lower flow rates for wading fishing. On these dates, the release will be set to match inflow to the FEW Dam with a 400 cubic feet per second maximum outflow. This lower flow reduces the depth to where anglers can more safely wade into more inaccessible sections of the Lehigh River.

Fishing Tackle Loaner Program

The public can borrow rods, reels and a tackle box full of hooks and other terminal tackle. This equipment is borrowed in much the same way books are borrowed from a library. Those wanting to borrow gear complete a form and the loan is made. At the end of the loan period the equipment is returned to the site.

This program is a partnership between the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, the American Sport fishing Association, and the Mauch Chunk Lake Park.. The program is designed to make it easy for anyone to access fishing tackle. Whether you are giving fishing a try for the first time, or returning to a childhood activity, these sites provide free tackle for loan. It's hoped that those making the loans will enjoy fishing so much they are hooked for life. This equipment may also be loaned to groups conducting angler education programs in the community.

PA Fish & Boat Commission announce Fish for Free Days, May 27th & July 4th!
