EVENT INFORMATION

So where do we ride?
Dave Matsinko, Author of the Outdoor Adventure Guide to Jim Thorpe will be on hand during the event and will introduce you to a number of popular trails found in and around the Mauch Chunk Lake Park.  Organized group riding will leave from his exhibit located at the beach area.  Group rides will include local favorites including The Mauch Chunk Ridge, Twin Peaks, and Psycho Betties’ Revenge.

Those types of trails – Are you kidding me? –
If technical trails are really not your speed then consider some of our nationally renown rails-to-trails.  Join local historians from the Summit Hill Historical Society and Switchback Gravity Railroad Foundation for an Interpretive Ride of the Switchback Trail.  This ride will interpret the history behind the trail and how the former Switchback Gravity Railroad once operated.  You will also learn of current plans for future improvements to this remarkable gem.  Also learn about additional improvements on some of the County’s other famed rails-to-trails including the Lehigh Gorge, Lehigh Canal, and Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor.

What if I’m not interested in biking – What’s in it for me?
Be sure not to miss Franklin Klock with the Carbon County Environmental Education Center along with WCO Fred Merluzzi with the PA Game Commission.  Both will be on hand during the event with a Live Birds of Prey Program.  This program will give participants the chance to get a close look at some of our magnificent birds of prey including the Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, Red-Tailed Hawks, and Great-Horned Owls.  In fact, The Education Center will be open throughout the event with other planned activities for those participating non-riders.

So what should we expect when we get there?  -
Simply check-in at the park office during registration hours and you will receive your gift registration packet.  On Thursday group rides will leave to tour the Old Jail Museum located in the Historic District of Jim Thorpe.  A downtown welcoming reception provided by our local outfitters will follow.  Entertainment will likely be provided at the Jim Thorpe Landing of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor at the train station.  Thursday evening will conclude with a late night snack and movie at the beach.  The featured film will be The Molly Maguires starring Sean Connery.  The movie was filmed locally in Jim Thorpe and the surrounding area.  Friday and Saturday will feature Bike and Tours of the #9 Mine & Museum.  Interpretive Rides of the Switchback Trail will also take place and will be guided by ranger staff and local historians.  Group rides of the Breakerboy, Twin Peaks, and Psycho Betties’ Revenge will also take place for the more experienced rider. Sunday will conclude the event with the Big Breakfast Bike Ride.  Why cook breakfast when you don’t have to?  This traditional breakfast buffet is enjoyed by many mountain bikers familiar with our local trails.

So what are the costs?
Please see the event fee schedule for rates and additional information.  We will require a 2-night stay during the event.  An early arrival rate is available for Thursday for those wishing to make it a 3-night stay.  Camping rates for the event are per site and are based on site occupancy of six people.  We did mention a social bonfire and comradery so we encourage you to partner up with family and friends.

In addition to the camping fees there are also several other options including the Bike and Tour of the Old Jail Museum, Bike and Tour of the #9 Mine & Museum, and Big Breakfast Bike Ride.  These rates are figured on a per-person basis and are optional for anyone who might be interested in participating.  The rides are meant to be unique and fun with all proceeds supporting our local trails, parks, and tourism.
